Witches in the Woods

So I thought I would talk about where the inspiration of my short story Witches in the Woods came from and why I chose this to be my first published work. Witches in the Woods is actually based off of a short story I wrote for a competition my ninth grade English teacher was holding for all of her classes. It was the first story I wrote that was more than just a page or two for an assignment. This is also when I realized that I love to write. When I got second place in the competition (she said it was because my ending was a little rushed, of which it was because I was reaching my page limit) I realized that I had a knack for it. That is where it all began.

Though I had not thought about it in quite some time, when I decided to give Amazon publishing a try it just seemed right to pull up that old story and do a major rewriting of it. I can honestly say that only the very basic story-line survived the revision. Not to mention it took a few turns I had not originally anticipated, but the end result is significantly improved from the original. I am still very pleased with how it turned out, and overjoyed that Witches in the Woods is once again the beginning of a new path in my life.

My Writing Style

Writing style and inspiration differs from writer to writer, as well as how they work through writer's block. So I thought it would be appropriate if I posted about my personal style. The writing style most commonly presented to me by family and friends is creating a detailed outline of the different chapters and the overall plot. Although this is a great way to keep your written work consistent throughout the plot as well as organized, I personally do not use this method. The reason for this is because I never follow it.

I prefer to write freely. Sure I have a basic idea of the story line, but what will exactly happen from point A to point B within any part of the plot is as much of a mystery to me as it is for the reader. Sometimes this causes my work to veer off in a direction I originally had not anticipated, thereby opening up new potential for that piece of work. In a way, you could say I let the story write itself, which is why I avoid written outlines. This restricts my thinking and can make it much harder for the plot to develop as it is supposed to. It is also known to interfere with my creativity and inspiration, thereby encouraging writer's block.

A lot of my every day inspiration comes from pictures and music, though looking around at the outside world around me has also been known to help. For example, you are driving down the road and see a small rundown house at the end of a dirt road. A house that was most likely built and possibly abandoned decades ago. While many would just see a rundown house, overgrown vegetation, maybe the potential for new life with some work, or even just simple curiosity, I see much more. I see a family that lived in this kind of place. Their lives and hardships, and possibly even why the place was abandoned in the first place. I see a story behind it. This is the inspiration I work with.

Despite all this combined with my natural creativity, especially in the fantasy world, I have experienced writer's block. As any writers could probably tell you, writer's block can be very frustrating and, in my opinion, even brutal. Sometimes this means I just need to take some time away from that work, which is why I like to have multiple projects going on at once. If I find myself at a point where it seems my creativity has run dry for the project I am working on, I will often set it aside and work on something else. This works great for me as things on the back burner will over time simmer with ideas. So when writer's block stops progress on my current work, I can easily switch to something else I had not worked on in a while. This helps to ensure I am always getting work done even during writer's block.

As mentioned before, all writers are different and what works for me might not work for someone else. This style of writing is what works best for me, as I always have the big picture in mind, thereby making it easy to switch off between the different projects within it. This also keeps my mind always thinking of new idea as different things inspire me as well as gives me a strong method for dealing with writer's block.

If I was to give advice to a young writer still working on developing their own unique writing style, I would say to do what feels right for you. There are countless ways to write and each one holds their own strengths and benefits. Do not be afraid or embarrassed to try out multiple different styles just to create your own from a mixer of different ones. In my opinion, this is what finding your own writing style is all about. Stay true to yourself and work through the hardships of those beginning stages of development, as it will give your blossoming skills the strength, passion, natural foundation, and source of inspiration you need to thrive. For only then will you find your own true potential.

If you have read any of my writings, then you have probably noticed that I mention a place called Sarvannia fairly regularly within them. But what exactly is Sarvannia? Since I am currently working on bringing more information about Sarvannia to this website, I decided I would do a blog about it to help answer some basic questions about it in the mean time. Eventually, I plan to have the location, maps, their government, society setup, and much more posted on this website. So if this interests you, you can follow my Facebook Page to get live up-to-date information on any new content added to this site.

Sarvannia is a planet located outside of the Milky Way Galaxy. This planet is considered the center point of the entire magical community, as there are a lot more magical planets out there. As a result, Sarvannia keeps to a calender and time frame that easily converts to the celestial calenders of the most widely known planets, including Earth. This makes communication with them much easier. One main reason Sarvannia is considered the center point of the magical community is because of a very unique magical feature that has evolved into the very planet itself. This magical feature is most commonly known as "the change."

The change is something not even humans notice at first, as it is so quick and subtle. Anyone who enters Sarvannia's atmosphere will change as necessary. The most common change is their language. They will instantly be able to speak and understand Sarvannia's worldwide language called Sarvannian. This transformation is so complete that it will feel to them as if they have been speaking it their entire lives. For some species, like humans, there is a physical change at this time as well.

You see, humans are almost dwarf-like compared to magicals simply because of their proportionately shorter physical body, not to mention their imperfect looks that are in no way perfectly mystical like the physical body of magicals. To compensate for this on Sarvannia, they will physically grow in height and proportion. In total, they will grow to be about three feet taller then they started out to be. This places them on average between eight and ten feet tall, right in the same average as many of the shorter magical species.

With this in mind, it brings up the question of how magicals can remain so hidden upon Earth if they are so much taller than us. This is because they magically do the reverse when they come to Earth. They will proportionately shrink in height anywhere from three to six feet so they stand at the same average height as any other human. After that, all it takes is some basic rules and spells as needed to cover over any final hints of their magical status.

Sarvannia did not always exist within our unique and magical world. At first, we did not even consider the question of where they came from in the first place. At most, we might have considered them in the same way as J.K. Rowling portrayed them in her Harry Potter Series. It was a couple years before we came up with the idea of there being a separate planet they all existed upon.

For many years, we simply called this planet The Magical World. Sarvannia was actually a random name tossed about a few times in our games to represent other random planets. It was not until a year or two ago that it was finally decided that Sarvannia and The Magical World would be one and the same planet. Today, I consider The Magical World as nothing more than a slang term for Sarvannia simply because of Sarvannia being the center of the magical community. All in all, this is how Sarvannia came to be and a few basic facts about it as a whole.

The Characters in my Writings

When I write my books, as I am sure it is for most fiction authors, my characters become like real people to me. I know them, feel for them, and sympathies with them just like they were my own friends. At times, I even view myself as them in order to give myself a better idea as to how they would act, think, speak, and feel. Despite all this, sometimes my characters take on a life of their own and even I have no idea what they will do next. However, of all the characters I have written about, Shakira from The Blood Fangs Series has got to be my favorite.

Shakira holds a wisdom and mystery about her that even to me is captivating. No matter how much you know about her, there is always that feeling of mystique, as you have no idea when, why, or how she will reappear next. This is why I am excited to already be writing on the second book in The Blood Fangs Series, as much will be revealed about both Shakira and her older sister Savannah. Where did they come from? Why are they so close and secretive? How did they find themselves at the Blood Family Coven? When did Savannah first become Heart Stopper? And what led up to Shakira's final actions against her sister? These are only some of the questions that will be revealed in this up coming book.

The Magical Community

With the launching of my website, I have taken the next step in opening up my beloved and vast fantasy world that has been developing within my mind ever since high school to all humans worldwide. However, with that said, I would be foolish and lying if I said I was the only one who helped to bring the magical community to the fruition it is today. Though there is still much more I have to develop and add to this site, there is one other who was vital to the development of this unique community of magicals across the universe. Without her, I can say with all certainty the magical community might never have developed. It is my dear and best friend of over ten years, Meghan Clontz. The magical community actually started out at the beginning our friendship as nothing more than a couple different magical species with ourselves as human victims in a role playing game that we have both grown to love. Over time, however, we started to see these magical beings and species as so much more than villains. They became, in a very real way, just as loving and human as you and me despite their unique and powerful magical differences. From there, the planet Sarvannia and the rest of the magical community was born. The ironic thing is it took me over ten years to realize this world had become so real to me despite its fantasized state that it was now everything to me within my writings. With this realization, I decided that the love and wonder we share for this ever changing and developing community was something that needed to be shared with all who love the fantasy world as much as we do. So with all this said, a big heart-felt thank you to my bff Meghan, and I wish to welcome all to The Magical Community!
